Sciaroni & Associates Announces New Legal Director
Sciaroni & Associates, a leading legal and investment advisory firm with offices in Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos, is pleased to announce the promotion of Max Howlett to his new role as Legal Director in its Phnom Penh office. In his new position, Max will be overseeing and coordinating the complex needs of our current and prospective clients across all practice areas.
Max joined the firm in 2007 as Legal Advisor and has worked across a diverse range of commercial, real estate and general legal matters. With the growth and expansion of our business, Max built his expertise in providing cogent legal advice to the firm’s national and international clients and demonstrated his skills as a team leader for our expatriate and local advisers and staff.
Max has worked in the Cambodian legal system since 1995. A seasoned lawyer, he has held multiple esteemed positions, including Solicitor in Australia and Legal Adviser in Cambodia with various non-government organizations, the United Nations and on bilateral law and justice programs for AusAID and USAID. A frequent speaker at regional conferences, Max participated on a New York Bar Association panel discussion in Hanoi regarding stolen artifacts and antiquities, and addressed an oil & gas conference in Saigon where he was a highly rated speaker.
Max played an integral role for Sciaroni & Associates coordinating the successful return of the culturally valuable Duryodhana statue from the temple of Koh Ker, providing research and drafting expert witness documentation in support of the matter on behalf of the Royal Government of Cambodia and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Max’s contribution to the success of this high profile case resulted in achieving justice for Cambodia and establishing a strong precedent for the repatriation of other cultural artifacts back to Cambodia.
Max has numerous accreditations including a Master of Laws from Melbourne University and has made significant presentations to legal forums and has had works published on the Cambodian legal system. He is a member of the International Bar Association (IBA) and the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific (LAWASIA).
Max assumes the role of Legal Director for Sciaroni & Associates following the recent departure of Matthew Rendell who resigned from the firm as an initial step to relocating his family to Australia. Senior Partner, Bretton G. Sciaroni announced “after a decade of service, we are very appreciative of Matt’s contributions to the growth and success of the firm, and we wish him and his family well for the future. Max’s promotion is thus consistent with the firm’s objective of providing the highest caliber of international practice standards combined with deep local knowledge. Max is a fine lawyer and brings the skill that will benefit the firm. In addition, Max is Matt’s hand-picked successor, a recommendation that firm management wholeheartedly endorsed.”
Max’s objective and commitment for his new role as Legal Director is to continue to provide clients with expert advice meeting international standards in a culture of professionalism and integrity in this challenging emerging market.
